C Jinarajadasa Proclaims

India’s Loyalty to the Empire.

C Jinarajadasa

1875 - 1953

In October 1916 leading Theosophist C Jinarajadasa (later president 1945 – 1953) visited Cardiff on a lecture tour. He conducted lectures at Cardiff Lodge, then meeting on Charles Street, and also at Penarth Library. The visit is best remembered for the impact he made with a speech on the ambitions of the India Home Rule movement in which he, Annie Besant and several other leading Theosophists were heavily involved.

The Speech in which he set out to allay fears about The Indian Home Rule Movement, which had intensified as a result of the First World War, was made at the Park Hotel. This report appeared in the Western Mail of October 30th 1916.

There was a crowded audience at the Park Hotel, Cardiff, on Saturday night, when the well known lecturer, C Jinarajadasa M.A. (Cantab) gave an address under the auspices of the Cardiff Lodge of the Theosophical Society, on “India’s Place in the Empire” The lecturer reminded his audience that two years ago a thrill of interest went through the whole British Empire when it was heard that Indian soldiers had landed in France and were fighting side by side with the British. But, though British papers commented on their loyalty, the Indians could not understand why such a fuss should be made of their action. It was the King-Emperor they reverenced, and it was a matter of duty to him. England had a King, India had a King-Emperor, and an Empire could not be talked of it if four fifths of it were ignored. Indians had formed hopes of one day being a Dominion and not a Dependency. So it was that India would become closer to the heart of a great Empire, and to England to whom she was indebted for the awakening of the spirit of democracy.
